Now Shooting on Red Epic

News No Comments

Red Epic-X #4041 is now a part of our arsenal. 5k resolution RAW footage has to be seen to be believed.

We chose the Red Epic for the following reasons:

  1. 5k resolution, soon to become 6k when Red releases the Dragon sensor this year (the most advanced image sensor ever made, with 18+ stops of dynamic range, amazing lowlight capabilities, and as mentioned 6k resolution).
  2. The Alexa was a consideration, but the Epic is now 1/4th the cost, and when the Dragon comes out, the Epic Dragon will be in a league of it’s own in many ways.
  3. RED RAW capabilities in post are incredible.  You are also working with 16-bit color.  These advantages are especially apparent for any green screen work and secondary color grading.
  4. High frame rate capabilities (up to 120 frames per second for 5x slow motion at 5k WS resolution, and up to 400 at 1k)
  5. RED is a ‘small’ american company devoted to revolutionizing the film industry.  I like the idea of supporting a company like this as opposed to a Canon or a Sony.  Yes I have joined ‘the rebellion’.

Why did we choose Zeiss ZE lenses?

Along with the camera upgrade, we have also invested in a full set of Zeiss ZE lenses:

Zeiss Lens Package:
Zeiss ZE 15mm f2.8
Zeiss ZE 25mm f2.0
Zeiss ZE 35mm f1.4
Zeiss ZE 50mm f2.0 Macro
Zeiss ZE 85mm f1.4

The image from the Zeiss ZE line of still lenses is virtually identical to the Zeiss CP.2′s and even very close to old Zeiss Prime cinema lenses (some would argue better).  They are sharp even wide open, and the ‘Zeiss look’ could be described as very sharp with a very clear distinction between what is in focus and what is out of focus.  The bokeh is generally beautiful, and Zeiss imagery is generally striking with it’s excellent microcontrast, detail, and separation of subject from background.  Zeiss has been creating optics basically since optics have existed, and is one of the most trusted brands in the industry.

We will soon be upgrading the still housings to cine-modded housings via either Cinematics or Duclos (currently examining the options).

Our full production package also now includes the Sanken CS3-E, an amazingly versatile shotgun microphone.  The Sanken CS3-E is unique in that it features 3 hypercardoid capsules, making it excellent for exteriors and interiors.  The mic has amazing off-axis elimination, and often sounds like you recorded in a sound booth.

We have the most competitive rates and versatile packages for any and all of your needs.

Introducing REMNANT – A Post-Apocalyptic Steampunk Epic

News 1 Comment

White Flame Studios, Brothers Young Productions, and Owen Smith are collaborating once again (this is the team that brought you the award-winning ‘The Prince’s Perfect Party’) to produce a series of short films taking place in Penny Dreadful Productions ‘REMNANT’ universe.

Remnant is the creative brain child of Penny Dreadful Productions and a collaborative effort of Atlanta’s creative community. Remnant made its debut as a line of steampunk inspired costumes at DragonCon 2011. The costumes, displayed beautifully in the photography of Dim Horizon Studio, were an instant hit among fans and Atlanta’s thriving independent film community took notice. Drawing inspiration from the intricate costumes, rich back story and Amy Houser’s fabulous poster art, we are setting out to create a multi-platform experience that includes costumes, films and live entertainment.

The result of this collaboration will be six live-action steampunk influenced short films, roughly three minutes apiece. The films will culminate in a bombastic, interactive live show called the Battle.

Each film features one of six characters that inhabit the world of Remnant. All films take place before a great battle and give the viewer an opportunity to decide who is right and who is wrong. Do you want order or do you want freedom?

The Setup:

The Turn was black, bloody, chaotic, then quiet. Mankind has spent the last 500 years clinging to a pathetic existence, but from the rubble of time’s decay rises a relentless power. Remnant will stop at nothing to unify the realm and restore order, but order comes at a price some won’t pay. Which side will you choose, Order or Freedom?

The really exciting part is YOU can be a part of this amazing project. Check out the Kickstarter page today!

The Prince’s Perfect Party takes top honors

News No Comments

White Flame Studios and Brothers Young Productions teamed up this year for the Atlanta 48 Hour Film Project.  The result was ‘The Prince’s Perfect Party‘.  The film was awarded Best Film, The Plaza Theater Ultimate Audience Award, Best Writing, and Best Graphics.

The film stars Whit Davies and was written by Matthew Young, Jared Young, and Blake Ray.  Owen Smith of Dogwood Motion Picture Company was the Director of Photography, and the film was directed by Chance White.  Michael Foster of Salty Graphic Studio contributed the award winning graphical elements.

White Flame Studios also competed in the competition last year, resulting in the short film ‘Thesis‘, which swept the acting awards thanks to the incredible performances by Kermit Rolison and Travis Young.  The psychological thriller featuring a splintered nonlinear structure was written by Joshua Montcalm.  Chance White, also the director of ‘Thesis’, has competed in the 48 Hour Film Project 6 times, each time reaching the ‘Best of’ screenings and garnering awards.

This is his first overall win.

His 48 Hour Film Project track record follows below:

2007 – ‘2 Centermeters‘: Best Cinematography, Best Use of Prop, Best Costumes
2008 – ‘Patient 108‘: Best Writing, Audience Award (Directed by Lauren Giovannoni at Unit One, Chance White was head writer and editor)
2009 – ‘The Route‘: Best Graphics (Russell Blair), Audience Award (Directed by Lauren Giovannoni at Unit One, Chance White was head writer and editor)
2010 – ‘Thesis‘: Best Actor – Kermit Rolison, Best Acting Ensemble, Audience Award Runner-Up
2011 Go Green – ‘Breaking Ground‘: Best Director – Chance White
2011 – ‘The Prince’s Perfect Party‘: Best Film, Ultimate Audience Award, Best Writing, Best Graphics

The 48 Hour Film Project is an annual worldwide competition in which each team is given only 48 hours to complete a 4-7 minute short film.  On Friday night, each team draws out of a hat from several genres, such as Comedy, Drama, Horror, Thriller, and more.  The team has the option to take a bonus genre if they are not happy with this initial draw (these are usually more difficult genres).  From there they are given a character, prop, and a line of dialogue.

White Flame Studios drew Anniversary / Birthday.  This was a main genre this year as this is the 10 year anniversary of the competition.  From there all teams were given the character of Tom / Tina Goodwin, who would have to be a Consultant, the prop of a book, and the line ‘When will she be here?’  Each team was tasked with including all of these elements in their 4-7 minute short film and adhering to the confines of their genre.

White Flame Studios and Brothers Young Productions will be taking ‘The Prince’ to the Taos Shortz Film Fest in March 2012 for Filmapalooza, in which the bittersweet film will compete for worldwide honors and the grand prize of Best Film Worldwide.  In the meantime, the film will play on Comcast Xfinity On Demand in the Get Local section in Atlanta until September 1st, and will be playing various film festivals.  Stay tuned to the film’s official website and right here for updates.
